HS Volleyball: Murrieta Mesa Knocks off Elsinore in a Big 4 Set Upset

The Rams Beat the Tigers 25-17, 21-25, 27-25, 32-30 to Advance to Round 2 of the CIF Southern Section Playoffs

Murrieta Mesa didn’t win a single game in the Southwestern League on their way to the CIF Southern Section Division 3 Playoffs. Tuesday night they let out their frustrations and upset highly favored Elsinore, the Sunbelt League’s perennial champions with 20 league Titles.

It’s a really tough league, but it prepares us for moments like this,” said Murrieta Mesa Coach Pat Manning. “Every night in that league is a hard match.”

The Rams took a 25-17, 21-25, 27-25, 32-30 victory over Elsinore. Kali Uhl had 33 kills in 56 attempts for Murrieta Mesa. Tommie Syverson added10 kills and13 digs.

Kiara Schmidt came up with a team leading 30 digs for the Rams. Savanah Esteban came up with 22 more and Sophia Maulupe had14 digs.

As you can see from stats, we played some very good defense” added Manning. “Savannah got a huge block verses Asia in 4th game and Abby comes in off the bench for the game winning block. Elsinore was ready and is tough at home… it took a great effort to win”

Elsinore’s Asia Clarke, Kayla Clarke and Olivia Elliott put together a strong effort, but fell to the Rams.

I’m just really proud of this group who did whatever was needed and found a way to come out on top said Manning”.

The Rams advance to Round 2 of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 Playoffs. On Thursday they will travel to Laguna Beach to face the Breakers, who had a bye in the opening round.
