The Broncos Defense Holds Off Yucaipa in the Second Half for the 11-9 Victory
Vista Murrieta celebrated their first Tournament Championship of the season Saturday. The Broncos won the prestigious Five Counties Water Polo Tournament with a exceptional defensive effort in the second half of the final game against Yucaipa.
Yucaipa took a 3-1 lead in the first period but the Broncos fought back, tying it all up at 7 apiece at the half. Vista Murrieta reached deep down and played some of the best defense they have played all year. The Broncos held the Thunderbirds to just to late fourth period goals while scoring 4 of their on for the 11-9 victory.
Isabel Rack and Katy Peterson scored four goals apiece to lead the Broncos attack. Rack also solidified the defense with 11 steals. Amira Van Buren scored the other 3 goals for Vista Murrieta, including two in the crucial third period. Goal keeper Jacelyn Geddes was exceptional all tournament.
Rack was on fire this weekend. The University of California at Irvine bound senior scored 31 goals and 44 steals during the tournament. She, Peterson and Van Buren combined for 66 goals to spearhead the Broncos offense.
Clara Schell scored four goals to lead the Thunderbirds attack. Kerston Corns and Jordan Herron each put two goals into the net for Yucaipa.
Vista Murrieta has an away non-conference game in La Jolla to play Bishop’s on Monday. The Broncos resume Southwestern league play on Tuesday at home against Chaparral.
