HS Wrestling: Great Oak takes Third Place at the 2017 Centennial Invitational

The Wolfpack Brings Back Seven Medals Saturday

The Great Oak wrestling team competed in the Centennial Invitational in Corona this Saturday. It was the first time that the Wolfpack competed in the tournament and Great Oak did extremely well.

As a team, the Wolfpack finished in third place, behind Roosevelt (second) and Centennial, who won the tournament.

I was really impressed with the precision at which the Centennial Invitational was run” said Great Oak coach Joe Conroy.”It’s a smaller tournament but the competition is tough… and we could be home by 3pm. It was nice for our varsity to see the sun on a Saturday in January”.

The Wolfpack battled all day and were able to get 7 wrestlers in the finals. Great Oak ended up with three of their wrestlers taking first place at the tournament. Senior David Ogden at 152, who continues to knock off top level guys and is making a name for himself. The two others capturing First place for the Wolfpack were junior Josh Liwanag, and sophomore John Gonzales.

Seniors Dylan Holt, Kevin Karpenske as well as juniors Joseph Conroy and Ryan Brady all placed in second place in their weight classes. Junior JT Read placed third in a tough 220 weight class.

It’s always nice to bring home some hardware for our team who has been battling all year’ said Coach Conroy. “We are coming down to the post season and every match counts. I have been telling my seniors to enjoy each match because you will remember this time forever”.
