Menifee: Armed Robbery Suspect Dies after Altercation with Loss Prevention Staff of a Local Business


On January 12, 2017, at 12:04 PM, officers from the Menifee Police Department received a report of a possible armed robbery at a business located within the 30200 block of Haun Road. Upon arrival, they located an adult male, later identified as Roderick Williams, detained by the loss prevention staff at the business.

Officers learned Williams entered the business and removed items from their packaging and exited the business without paying. Loss prevention contacted Williams in the parking lot. During the contact, a physical altercation ensued. Loss prevention staff physically detained Williams and held him until officers arrived.

Upon arrival, officers located Williams with injuries possibly due to the altercation and summoned paramedics to the scene.

Due to the altercation with loss prevention staff, officers transported him to a local hospital where he would be medically evaluated for booking into county jail. After arriving at the hospital, Williams became unresponsive and emergency treatment was administered by hospital staff. Williams was admitted and he remained in the care of hospital staff for several days.

On January 14, 2018, Williams died at the hospital. The circumstances surrounding his death are still under investigation. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Homicide Unit has assumed the investigation.
