Men’s Soccer: UC Riverside Suffers First Loss at SMU 1-0

The Highlanders Next Game is against Florida Gulf Coast

The battle of the undefeated teams went to host SMU (4-0-0) Monday night as the UC Riverside Men’s Soccer Team (3-1-0) was edged out by the Mustangs 1-0. An unassisted goal by SMU’s Nicky Hernandez in the 24th minute would prove to be an early game winner.

Despite a near clean slate for both sides of the ball, both teams were persistent and aggressive on offense with the Highlanders notching 11 shots, four on frame, and the Mustangs tallying 12, with seven on frame. The second half was identical with both teams firing off seven shots and collecting three saves.

Just over half way through the first period, SMU put on the pressure taking a few shots in a short period of time before Hernandez punched in the only goal of the match unassisted.

The second half featured 45 scoreless minutes, but the Highlanders would earn a great opportunity in the 78th minute with junior Daniel Aguirre trying to play a ball into the box that would be knocked down by a Mustang hand.

Aguirre would earn the penalty kick, but miss for the first time this season as the SMU keeper punched it out on the left side. The Mustangs would hang on to their 1-0 lead and improve to 4-0-0.

Aguirre led the team with four shots, two on goal, and both junior Federico Ucar and sophomore Issa Badawiya each added one on frame as well. Senior Edwyn Gutierrez was strong in goal adding six saves on the day.
