Murrieta: Man Arrested for Attempted Murder & Assault with a Deadly Weapon at the Waterstone Apartments

On Tuesday, July 17th at 11 pm, Officers responded to the Waterstone Apartments at 24850 Hancock Avenue regarding a report of a gunshot.

Several residents called 9-1-1 to report a male had fired a gunshot at another male within the apartment complex.

Officers arrived on scene and contacted the male responsible for firing the shot as he was exiting his apartment. This male was identified as Michael Richard Munoz (32-year-old Murrieta resident).

Through subsequent investigation, Officers determined Munoz had driven to his apartment minutes earlier and had driven through the complex at a high rate of speed. Munoz nearly struck a male who was walking through the complex—this resulted in a heated exchange of words between Munoz and the male.

Munoz went to his apartment, retrieved a handgun and returned to confront the subject who was now in the presence of other neighbors. Munoz pointed the handgun at the subjects which prompted them to run. Munoz fired one round and then fled to his apartment. No one was struck by the gunshot.

Officers recovered the handgun. With the use of the police K-9, officers recovered the spent shell casing that resulted from the gunshot.

Munoz was arrested for the following charges:

PC 664/187 – Attempted Murder

PC 245(A)(2) – Assault with a Deadly Weapon (firearm)

PC 246.3 – Willful Discharge of a Firearm

PC 29800(a)(1) – Felon in Possession of a Firearm

PC 417(a)(2) – Brandishing of a Firearm

Munoz was transported to the Cois Byrd Detention Center where he was booked—bail set at $1,000,000.00. Booking # 201827837
