Murrieta: Man Who Killed 10 Year Old Anthony Ochoa in a Lake Elsinore Hit & Run in March Sentenced to 9 Years in Prison

David Loperena, 26, of Lake Elsinore who pleaded guilty for running over 10-year-old Anthony Ochoa of Lake Elsinore on March 13th. He was sentenced to nine years in state prison by Riverside County Superior Court Judge John Monterosso Thursday.

Ochoa was struck by Loperena’s pickup truck at the intersection of Langstaff Street and Sumner Avenue when he and his sister were crossing the intersection that Tuesday evening. The defendant fled the scene.

According to witnesses, the truck struck the boy and he rolled onto the hood of the pickup, landing on the windshield. The truck slowed long enough for the injurred boy to slide off of the vehicle and then sped away.

The 10-year-old was rushed to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, but died. Detectives identified Loperena’s Chevrolet as the one involved in the hit-and-run with the help witnesses on March 14.

Loperena was on probation at the time and has had prior misdemeanor convictions for driving under the influence and theft.

Loperena pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run resulting in death and sentence- enhancing allegations of fleeing the scene of a crime and causing an accident that resulted in a fatality.
