Senior Ian Fleenor and Freshman Goalkeeper Collin Wintersmade lead the Nighthawks
Murrieta Valley powered past Capistrano Valley in Saturday’s CIF Southern Section Division 3 Championship game 12-8. It was the Nighthawks second CIF Crown, the last one was in 2006.
Senior Ian Fleenor led the Nighthawk offense as he scored five goals, three assists and had three steals in his final high school game to bring the crown back to Murrieta Valley. Hudson Rawlings also put three in the net for Murrieta. Hudson Kelley, Casey Lynton, Hunter Ramaekers and William Barnes also scored for the Nighthawks.
The Nighthawks were focused and determined to win the game and shed 9 years of CIF SS playoff agony. It was Fleenor who led the charge in the first half scoring four goals, getting two steals and making two blocks to give Murrieta Valley a 6-3lead at the half.
Murrieta Valley kept on the pressure and never trailed in the game. Freshman goalkeeper Collin Wintersmade made it difficult for the Cougars coming up with 11 saves. Austin Sechrest scored four goals and Trevor Adamshad added three for the Capistrano.
“We’ve had a lot of heartbreak in the finals in our history,” said Nighthawk Coach Bryan Lynton “I talked to the boys about winning it not only for the team this year but the teams in past years that had their hearts broken. They seemed to get it and I was happy for all of them.”
