Riverside: Armed, Distraught Man Safely Surrenders after Mental Breakdown Monday Morning


On Monday, January 7, 2019, at about 10:30 a.m., officers responded to the area of Ryan Bonaminio Park to check the welfare of a man who was on a crisis hotline stating he was in possession of a firearm and wanting to hurt himself.

Officers checked the area and located the man sitting inside his vehicle on Tequesquite Avenue and Elderwood Court.

It was determined this person was in the midst of a mental health crisis and armed. The area was contained and communication began with him. Emergency negotiators responded along with on duty SWAT officers. After a couple hours, negotiators were able to convince the man to peacefully surrender. He was safely taken into custody and officers confiscated a loaded handgun from his vehicle.

The man was taken to a local facility for evaluation and treatment. The training, planning, tactics, and patience by all involved help resolve this situation peacefully and with no injuries.
