Riverside: Carjacker who Seriously Injured Female Driver while Trying to Flee Police Arrested 


Joseph Heaps was Fleeing after Stealing from the Lowe’s on Magnolia Avenue

At around 12:35 pm on Tuesday, December 4, 2018, a Riverside Police Motor Officer was flagged down by a store employee regarding a theft just occurred at the Lowe’s, located in the 9800 block of Magnolia Avenue. As the officer was dismounting his motorcycle, the suspect fled and a foot pursuit ensued.

The suspect entered the passenger side of a vehicle that was backing out of a parking space, attempting the steal it from the female driver by striking her. But the motor officer was able to pull the suspect from the car and detain him with the help from an off-duty police officer.

Paramedics arrived and attended to the victim, who sustained a broken arm. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Joseph Heaps, 29-years-old of Moreno Valley, was arrested and later booked into jail for attempted carjacking, burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, and resisting arrest.
