Riverside: Fleeing Armed Robbery Suspect Shot & Arrested after Chase Monday

On Monday, July 9, 2018, at approximately 12:53 PM, the Riverside Public Safety Communications Center received information about a vehicle pursuit entering the City of Riverside from the County of San Bernardino.

Deputies from the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department, assisted by Officers of the California Highway Patrol, were pursuing an individual believed to have been involved in an armed robbery that occurred earlier in the County of San Bernardino. The suspect vehicle was pursued to the 4800 block of Monticello Ave. in the City of Riverside, where the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, hiding in the City’s storm drain system.

Evidence was later located in the vehicle linking the suspect to the robbery in San Bernardino, as well as other crimes.

Riverside Police Officers responded to assist in setting up a containment perimeter. As officers attempted to locate the suspect within the storm drain system, multiple gunshots were heard from within the storm drain tunnels. Hours later, as officers were checking the tunnels, a resident saw the suspect emerge from a manhole cover near the intersection of Van Buren Blvd, and Arlington Ave, reportedly armed with a handgun.

Deputies and officers gave chase of the suspect, who fled on foot southbound through a shopping center and into one of the businesses. Law enforcement personnel confronted the armed suspect inside the business and an officer-involved shooting occurred.

No law enforcement personnel were injured in the altercation. The suspect sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

This investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Detective Adrian Tillett at (951) 353-7105, or Detective Jim Brandt at (951) 353-7137.
