Riverside: One CHP Officer Killed & 2 Other Officers Wounded in a Shootout Monday Evening

The Shooter was Killed in the Gun Battle

One California Highway Patrol officer was killed and two were wounded Monday following a shootout near the 215 Freeway in the Riverside area Monday. The gunman was also shot dead.

The shoot out began at about 5:35 p.m. in the area of Box Springs Boulevard and Eastridge Avenue, just west of Interstate 215. It all started after traffic stop initiated by a CHP officer. The suspect grabbed a weapon and started firing from his vehicle that was stopped on an overpass at Eucalyptus Avenue.

Witnesses say that the suspect opened fire with a rifle on the CHP Officers. One was airlifted from the scene. The other two Officers were taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The California Highway Patrol announced that one of the officers had died. The surviving officers suffered non-life threatening injuries.
