Riverside: Traffic Stop Near Galleria Mall Leads to Firearm Arrest


On Monday evening, January 8, 2018, at about 6:42 p.m., an officer assigned to the Galleria at Tyler shopping mall made a traffic stop on a car for vehicle code violations in the area of Magnolia Avenue and Hughes Alley. The officer contacted the occupants and learned the driver did not have a driver’s license and was on felony probation for illegal possession of a firearm.

Further investigation revealed two other occupants were also on probation and there was a loaded handgun inside the car.

The officer detained all the occupants and determined the driver to be the one in possession of the handgun. Yonatan Ortiz, 21-years-old of Riverside, was arrested and booked into jail for being a felon in possession of a firearm and other weapons violations. The other occupants of the car were identified and released.
