San Diego: Tony Finau Leads after Round 1 in the 2018 Farmers Insurance Open

Tiger Woods Brings in the Big Crowds and Shoots 72

Tony Finau shot a 65 on the North Course at Torrey Pines in the first round of the 2018 Farmers Insurance Open. Crowd favorite Tiger Woods shot a round of 72.

Woods is appearing in his first PGA Tour event in a year. He has been sidelined by his fourth back surgery, but managed to hit an even-par 72 in the opening round. He trails Tony Finau by seven shots

The $6.9 million Farmers Insurance Open is a 72-hole tournament which continues through Sunday at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, Calif. and features 156 professional golfers vying for a winner’s prize of $1,242,000 and 500 FedExCup points.

“It was fun to compete again” said Woods. “It was fun to be out there,”

Finau birdied his opening two holes and he wound up with nine birdies, the last one from 35 feet to take the lead. He has a one-shot lead over Ted Potter Jr. and Ryan Palmer who shot six under in round one.

“It played a lot tougher than it did in the past,” Finau said. “I think it’s just a credit to my start. From there I was just able to let the golf course come to me”.
