San Jacinto: Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Investigating Last Thursday’s In Custody Death

On Thursday, July 11, 2019, at 6:46 PM, deputies assigned to the city of San Jacinto responded to an attempted suicide on the 300 block of Angela Way. The deputies arrived within minutes and were directed by the reporting party to a family member in the backyard with a self-inflicted knife wound.

Upon entering the backyard, deputies encountered 28-year-old, Jose Andres Lopez, who was bleeding profusely from the neck and holding a knife. Lopez refused to drop the knife after several commands to do so.

A taser deployment caused Lopez to release the knife and he was handcuffed as deputies performed life-saving measures until paramedics arrived. Lopez was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for self-inflicted injuries, where he later died.

Since Lopez died following a use of force by department members, investigators from the Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit assumed the investigation which is still on-going.

The official cause of death will be determined by the Riverside County Coroner’s Bureau.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department encourages anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Central Homicide Investigator Stoyer at (951) 955-2777, or Hemet Station Investigator Martinez at (951) 791-3400.
