SoCal: Air National Guard F-16 Fighter Crashes near March Air Reserve Base Injuring 12 People


An Air National Guard Fighting Falcon F-16 fighter crashed while taking off from March Air Reserve Base Thursday afternoon. The pilot ejected and escaped injury but 12 people on the ground were hospitalized with minor injuries.

The crash was reported at around 3:45 pm. The jet crashed through the roof of a manufacturing building in the Arnold Heights neighborhood on Opportunity Way, near Meridian Parkway.

Officials,concerned about any weapons that could be on board the plane and other hazardous materials, created an evacuation zone in the area. The FAA has issued a temporary flight restriction over the site which will be in force until Friday evening.

The 215 Freeway was shut down in both directions. The freeway near the crash site would remain closed as authorities investigate the accident.
