A 28 year old tow truck driver from DJ’s Towing Company was called by AAA to assist a disabled motorist on the right shoulder of the I-15 southbound to Temecula Parkway off-ramp. The tow truck arrived on scene and was parked in front of the disabled vehicle approximately five feet west of the solid white line separating the traffic lane from the right shoulder.

As the tow driver was standing to the left rear of his vehicle, a 2016 Kia Optima drove onto the right shoulder and side-swiped the disabled vehicle. It struck the tow driver and the left rear of the tow truck. The crash occurred at 11:35 p.m. Friday.

The tow driver was thrown onto the rear deck of the tow truck, sustaining fatal injuries. The driver of the Kia, identified as Danika McGetrick, 19, of Temecula, was arrested by CHP for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and driving under the influence causing injury or death. She was booked into the Southwest Detention Center.

The disabled motorist and passenger were outside of the disabled vehicle at the time of the collision and were uninjured. They remained at the scene and provided their statement to the CHP. The Temecula Parkway off-ramp was closed for approximately two hours while the collision was investigated.

The California Highway Patrol, Temecula Area Office is conducting this traffic collision investigation.
