HS Basketball: Murrieta Valley Holds Off Murrieta Mesa 66-59 Wednesday Night


Southwestern League Leading Temecula Valley Crushes Chaparral 87-51 & Great Oak Beats Vista Murrieta Easily 62-38

Murrieta Mesa suffered it’s fourth loss in Southwestern league competition Wednesday night, falling to the Murrieta Valley 66-59. The Nighthawks jumped out to a huge 20-11 lead in the first period and hung on to beat their cross town rival.

The Rams outscored the Nighthawks by a point in the second period 15-14, were tied with 14 apiece in the third, and won the final period 19-18. A slow start cost Murrieta Mesa dearly.

The Nighthawks were led by senior Emilio Valencia and  freshman Damien Ruiz who scored 17 points each. Juniors Kyler Anderson added 10 points, Ryan Larson 8 more and senior Kyle Greeley 6 points for MV.

Senior Nico Giulietti, the Italian import was held to 4 points and senior Casey Fuller to 2. The Nighthawk’s big play maker, senior Anthony Montion did not play the second half after suffering a head injury in the first period. The senior scored 2 points.

Seniors Jonah Zandi and Devin Fortune led the Ram attack by scoring 11 points apiece. Juniors Mathew McIntosh and Anthony Salek both scored 9 each. Freshman Lewis Singleterry dropped 8 points into the bucket while junior Cameron Rentie added 5,seniors Anthony Salas 4 and Dane Grippo scored 2 points.

In other Southwestern league action, Temecula Valley crushed Chaparral 87-51. The Wolfpack handled the Broncos easily as Great Oak defeated Vista Murrieta 62-38.

League play continues on Friday as Murrieta Mesa visits Temecula Valley, Chaparral hosts Great Oak and Murrieta Valley faces arch rival Vista Murrieta.
