HS Boys Basketball: Murrieta Valley Contains Chaparral, Temecula Valley Falls to Great Oak & Murrieta Mesa Stuns Vista Murrieta

The Golden Bears & Wolfpack are Tied for First Place in the Southwestern League

The race in the Southwestern league tightened significantly up Wednesday night. League leading Temecula Valley fell to Great Oak 73-66 while Murrieta Valley’s tenacious defense shut down Chaparral 52-37. Murrieta Mesa finally won it’s first league game of the year as the Rams stunned Vista Murrieta, 75-63.

Murrieta Valley jumped out to a 27-19 lead in the first half of last night’s game. The Nighthawks defense then held Chaparral to five points in the third period. Murrieta Valley senior center Kyle Greeley dominated in the key and also led the Nighthawks with 17 points.

Junior Emilio Valencia added 8 points while senior Anthony Montion and junior Ryan Larson and Kyler Anderson scored 6 each. Freshman Damien Ruiz added 5 points and Nico Giulietti 4.

Junior Jacob Schmidt and seniors Jon Galan led the Pumas with 12 points each. Senior Nate Martin added 9 more while junior Elijah Mays scored 2. Juniors Oliver Wilson and JJ Johnson had a points apiece.

Great Oak, playing at Temecula Valley got off to a 17-15 lead in the opening period. The Wolfpack made it a 36-32 game at the half and then exploded for 22 points, outscoring the Golden Bears 22-12 in the third period.

Temecula Valley fought back, scoring 22 in the final period. It was too little too late, as the Golden Bears could not overcome the Wolfpack lead. Final score, 73-66. Both teams are now tied for the league lead with identical records of 5-1. It was Great Oak’s fifth straight victory.

Murrieta Mesa overwhelmed Vista Murrieta in the fiirst half. The Rams scored 42 points and held the Broncos to just 24. Vista Murrieta adjusted in the second half, outscoring the Rams 39-33 but the damage was done. The Rams won their first league game of the year 75-63.

Murrieta Mesa will host Great Oak on Friday as Southwestern league action continues. Temecula Valley will head to Murrieta Valley and Vista Murrieta faces Chaparral.
